REITA and Industry News
“Japanese government ready to back business in minerals race"
The following are REITA comments regarding this article: · Japanese government and industry have long recognized the supply issues regarding RE technologies
· Japanese innovation and manufacturing of RE technologies has not totally moved “offshore”; however Japan’s RE technology supply chains are 100% dependent on China for RE feedstocks for their existing supply chains
· JOGMEC was established by the Japanese government for just these kinds of programs that protect Japanese businesses
· This move demonstrates the strategic importance the Japanese place on the security of RE technology supply chains
· It is one example of the progressive thinking and actions that need to be taken by RE technology stakeholders (industry, government and academia)
Summary of December 11, 2009 Department of Commerce Rare Earth Materials Roundtable
The roundtable was comprised of 25 stakeholders [including REITA and some of our Consortium members] representing key end-users and suppliers of rare earth materials, as well as interested USG agencies, including DoD, GAO, USTR, and the White House (list of participants is included). The purpose of the roundtable was to discuss issues related to rare earth metals that may affect existing end-uses, and, in particular, emerging “green technology” end-uses in order to provide policy makers with a snapshot of concerns for U.S. competitiveness in these emerging industries.
